The second number (30 or 40) indicates the oil's viscosity at operating temperature. 5W-40 is thicker at high temperatures, providing better protection for older or high-performance engines. 5W-30 is thinner, which improves fuel economy and is required for modern Euro 5/6 engines with DPF filters where the manufacturer specifies ACEA C3.
ACEA C3 is the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association standard for Low SAPS oils (low in sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur). These oils do not damage DPF and TWC catalytic converters. Most European manufacturers use ACEA C3 from around 2009 onwards — VW 507.00, BMW LL-04, MB 229.51 and others are all ACEA C3 compliant.
Generally — yes. Modern full synthetic oils are compatible with older engines and typically provide better protection than semi-synthetic. However, if the engine has been running on mineral oil for a long time and has high mileage, consult a mechanic first — a gradual transition may be advisable to avoid seal issues.
As a guide: mineral oil — every 5,000–7,500 km; semi-synthetic — every 7,500–10,000 km; full synthetic — every 10,000–15,000 km. Always follow the interval in your owner's manual. City driving, frequent cold starts and short trips degrade oil significantly faster than motorway driving.
The DPF (diesel particulate filter) traps soot particles and burns them off periodically. Standard ACEA A3/B4 oil with high ash content leaves deposits that gradually block the DPF and can destroy it completely — replacement can cost 1,000+ EUR. That is why engines with DPF must use Low SAPS oil with ACEA C2 or C3 approval.
